Spend an amazing day to see the flora and fauna of this nature park
The park of flora & fauna, plus a superb location overlooking Brokopondo Reservoir, make this a very popular and worthwhile day trip from Paramaribo.
Leo Falls, Brownsberg Nature Reserve by Ariadne Van ZandbergenAbout 100km inland from Paramaribo as the crow flies, and readily accessible by road, the scenic and wildlife-rich Brownsberg Nature Park is one of the most popular destinations for organised day trips from the capital. Created in 1969, the 112km2 park protects the forested slopes of Brownsberg ('Brown's Mountain'), which rises to an altitude of 560m immediately east of the Brokopondo Reservoir.
Around 1, 500 types of plant have been recorded in the park, as have 410 bird species. It is also one of the most reliable sites in Suriname for seeing large mammals, with red howler and black spider monkey both common in the vicinity of the camp, along with several smaller monkey species and the twitchy little agouti. The mountain, like nearby Brownsweg, is named after John Brown.
Itinerary
We will drive from Paramaribo to the Bownsberg nature park.
During the tour to the 12, 000-hectare Brownsberg nature park, you will be introduced to a large part of the range of flora and fauna that the Surinamese rainforest has to offer in just one day. Perhaps, under the loud roar of the monkeys, you can take walks to idyllic waterfalls and mountain streams and enjoy magnificent views of the tropical rain forest and from the top of the mountain the Brokopondo manmade lake known as the Borokopondo stuwmeer.
Climbing mountain- scrambling are the hotspot activities to enjoy the beautiful jungle waterfalls and creeks. The howler monkeys will welcome for sure in their habitat as well; if you pay attention, you can even see one swing on the top of the trees during the jungle trail hiking.
At a height of 500 meters lies the Mazaroni plateau with a unique view over the manmade lake. From Paramaribo to Brownsberg is 300 km.

A Recent Review of this tour
Read More Reviews For This TourNelson was a wonderful host for our first visit to Paramaribo. He was always "on time" and provided unique, personal experiences during the two days that we experience Suriname. Nelson really knows his craft and has a whole lot of insight to share with us. He took us on a unique hiking and visiting experience to Brownsburg. Great! Nelson picked us up and dropped us off at the airport.
