The best time to go to Sri Lanka is between December and mid-April which is considered to be the peak season. Temperatures are fairly constant year-round, with coastal regions enjoying average temperatures of 25-30°C and the highlands 15-18°C on average.
When traveling during the summer months from May to September, visitors should head towards the east coast and northern regions for dry, sunny weather.
During the winter months, October to February, the west and south west enjoy favourable weather conditions when the monsoon season hits the east and north.
Sri Lanka is the perfect introduction to traveling in South Asia, which can at times feel a bit chaotic and unpredictable. While it is largely safe for visitors, travelers should always remember to avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place.
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, and southeast of the Arabian Sea; it is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. It shares a maritime border with India and the Maldives. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital, and Colombo is its largest city and financial center.
Sri Lanka accords de facto official status to Sinhala and Tamil, and English as a link language. The languages spoken on the island nation are deeply influenced by the various languages in India, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Travellers will find English frequently spoken by those working in the tourism industry.
