Discover the highlights of downtown Lisbon
So many times called the city of the seven hills, Lisbon is the most charming and luminous European capital! Let me introduce you to the scenic narrow streets of one of the oldest neighborhoods: Alfama. As far back as the 5th century, Alfama was inhabited by the Visigoths, and remnants of a Visigothic town wall remain. But it was the Moors who gave the district its shape and atmosphere. In Moorish times this was an upper-class residential area. After earthquakes brought down many of its mansions (and post-Moorish churches) it reverted to a working-class, fisher-folk quarter. It was one of the few districts to ride out the 1755 earthquake.
Downhill we'll cross the grid that forms the commercial area by walking along the vivid squares and avenues of the town. We will have the chance to admire the daily life of locals along Rossio Square and Augusta Street. Next it's time to reach Chiado district, an elegant, sophisticated district of theaters, bookshops, old-style cafes and art nouveau jewelry shops!
Itinerary
We'll meet at the Sun Gate (Portas do Sol) viewpoint.
After visiting the area and understand the geography of the city we'll walk downhill passing Alfama district until we reach the waterfront.
Front there we'll proceed towards the downtown area passing to visit the main sights such as Augusta Street or Rossio Square.
From there continue, this time uphill , towards the fancy neighborhood of Chiado.
The tour will end here, a great place to have lunch , dinner or just a drink.

A Recent Review of this tour
Read More Reviews For This TourThank you so much Matilde for introducing us to Lisbon. You were very articulate and knowledgeable about Portuguese history and culture. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our half-day with you, and we felt an immediate connection. The time went so quickly, and we could have spent many more hours exploring the city with you and not become tired. We so appreciate all of your suggestions for our next couple of days in the Lisbon area.
